Brrrr! Time for a dip in Walden Pond?
By David Beard, Globe Staff
With temperatures dipping toward freezing early today -- and feeling 10 degrees colder than that with the chilly winds -- is this a perfect time to unpack that Speedo and think about a lap in Henry David Thoreau's favorite pond?
If so, an environmental group wants you!
Swimmers will line up at 2 p.m. on December 6 for the Polar Bear Plunge into Walden Pond, the Global Warming Education Network said at a conference at MIT yesterday.
Last year, a similar frosty dip at Thoreau’s historic spot in Concord (see Gatehouse Media video above) produced worldwide coverage in the fight against global warming, said Roger Shamel, the Lexington-based group's president.
Each swimmer is asked to bring two friends for a support team. And a swimsuit, of course (organizers are not taking Thoreau's "simplify, simplify'' theme to its bare extreme).
After the plunge, the shivering splashers will share a celebratory cup of hot chocolate, said Shamel. The event is part of the National Polar Bear Plunge, timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Talks taking place Dec. 1-12 in Poland.
For more information, go to www.gwenet.org or www.keepwintercold.org
Shamel also mentioned another Concord event: the appearance by environmentalist and author Bill McKibben at 7:30 p.m.on Nov. 21, at the Trinitarian Congregational Church on Walden Street. That event is sponsored by the Concord Climate Action Network.
Readers, would you brave December's breezes for a dip in Thoreau's pond? Or is that a little too seasonally environmental for you? Transcend your apathy and have your say in our comments section below.

Don't be a wimp! Join in. You'll recover from the cold by 6PM and you'll have done something memorable for Global Warming.
"If so, a environmental group wants you!"

"a" environmental, or "an" environmental?
A mistake regarding something so elemental? :)
DB responds: Elemental indeed! Fixed, many thanks.
The Facts!
Add to that the fact that since 1998 the world’s average temperature has shown a tendency to fall not rise. This fact the warmers play down by arguing that you need a 10 year period, or better still a 30 year period to register a convincing change. Well 2008 is just around the corner and sadly another 20 years on the next natural cycle will have done its best or worse vindicating carbon dioxide as the villain of the piece.
Turning to Al Gore’s doom and gloom laden Oscar, I will pose but two questions. Why scare the families of the world with tales that polar bears are heading for extinction when there is good evidence that there are now twice as many of these iconic animals, most doing well in the Arctic than there were 20 years ago? Why cry wolf on a rise in the spread of malaria thanks to rising temperatures when this mosquito borne disease was a main killer of people throughout the Little Ice Age in Britain and northern Russia?
it would be a great idea...if global warming were really something we could control.
Aren' they the little copycats! Try South Boston, folks.
A Ploud,
Are you serious? Where are you getting your data?
The world is definitely getting hotter, and we should be doing everything possible to reverse this trend yesterday. Anything less is irresponsible, and simply moronic!!!
Hey A Ploud -
You get the facts and stop watching FOX news (can't really call it "news") and listening to Rush. Oh and I'm sure Patrick Michaels of the "WorldClimateFund" is one of your main sources of information. Let's see is he really credible?...oh he is funded by Exxon/Mobil....definitely biased to convince people the CO2 from petroleum burning is not a problem.
And climate change isn't only about temperature rises. So they haven't risen across the world since 1998? The world has had a dramatic shifts in temperatures at locals. There is much more extreme weather. That is what global warming is about. And the temps in the arctic has risen dramatically over the past 40 years.
There is a plethora of research unequivocally proving melting ice caps and huge fluctuations in local temperatures (all which was predicted in the early 1980s). So either you have an economical interest in making sure fossil fuels are our main source of energy or you are just a gullible idiot that listens to right wing radio and voted for GWB twice.
Global warming AND global cooling happens. We are just in the warming phase. When the cooling happens, all the activists will be out asking for money to fix the world. They are not doing anything to change the world. They just like to raise money for their pockets. Don't be scammed! Better to not fool with Mother Nature.
Sounds like a good idea if there really was somethjing to global warming. Tell you what, I will jump in right after the bloviating Al Gore.
"Don't be a wimp! Join in. You'll recover from the cold by 6PM and you'll have done something memorable for Global Warming. "
How about doing something useful...like planting a tree. How about riding a bike instead of driving to work?
Or even better, why not just volunteer with a local conservation group?
Dipping yourself in cold water isn't going to do anything for the environment.
so if I don't agree with you, you won't post it?
Global cooling and warming happen but over 100,000 yrs (cooling) and 10,000 yrs (warming). This is basic global ecology. The problems that we are experiencing right now are due to RATES of change. Yes, the world will survive global warming. Thinking that things are okay is laughable though. The national economies of the world are extremely dependent on stability of the climate for agricultural, trade, energy, etc... reasons (OURS TOO). If you are fine with the USA gambling the quality of life that so many of its citizens enjoy, then keep on riding your horse called ignorance.
George, where should we get this info from, NPR? Now that's a reputable, unbiased news source. I scanned your post looking for a Bush reference, and you didn't let me down. Another canned, predictable moonbat response.
Facts & Logic here only 'please!' NOT emotion & feelings!
There are nine "flaws" in Gore's film, established by the High Court in Britain during a civil case. Their major contentions include criticism of the famous inverted hockey stick graph which purported to show constant emissions for many centuries and big increases in CO2 emissions since 1900. That model completely neglected medieval warming (proven) and the little ice age from the 16th century to 1850 (also proven), they argue.
IN BRIEF, THEIR other main assertions are: there has been no global warming since 1995; the polar bear population is not under threat from climate change but from human hunters; they also say that the Arctic and Greenland glaciers have been receding since 1850, long before the invention of SUVs; and, finally, that the UN's International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) takes issue with Al Gore's contention that sea levels will rise by 20ft (more like 19 inches, says the IPCC).
None of these arguments are new. It is the view of critics of global warming that the Earth's climate is still recovering from the Little Ice Age after it ended around 1850. A quick Google of any of the above issues does point to potential flaws (ie too much reliance on modelling, projecting and extrapolation) but the problem is that the contrary argument often teeters on a rickety foundation.
The third strand is McAleer's argument that the measures proposed to tackle climate change will cause crisis and chaos. The world would collapse without fossil fuel, he says. "The cure could be worse than the disease." He is particularly scathing of Al Gore's call for a total ban on fossil fuels in a decade, which would be a disaster, leading to millions of people being driven into poverty.
The views are certainly contrarian. But there are some eminent scientists among the contributors, including Dr Syun-Ichi Akasofu, former director of the International Arctic Research Centre and Prof Richard Lindzen, an atmospheric physicist from MIT, both of whom are sceptics.
Do McElhinney and McAleer themselves reject climate change, reject the need to cut down on our dependency on oil? "The idea that CO2 causes climate change or causes global warming - let's keep it clear - is not settled," says McElhinney. "The idea of dramatically altering the way we live would be a mistake until more information has been gathered." Both believe that there is no panic, and that the world has 300 years (until coal is exhausted) to come up with alternative sources of energy.
Also at issue is the fact that there are hundreds of undersea volcanoes spread out over the globe and especially under the artic ocean and that this is a fact; though it is an inconvenient fact to those that are blinded by their liberalism.
Hey George, did you walk or bike to work today, or did you get into your fossil fuel burning vehicle to make your personal contribution to the melting ? When you get home, don't forget to tune in Al Franken's talk show for more "knowledge". Idiot.
is it mandatory to have a support team?
There was a guy who went swimming in Walden every day, including the days when he had to break the ice to take a dip. The last I saw him was about 10 years ago. He may have passed away.
To George, from one idiot to another. I voted for Bush twice. You'll vote for Barack twice. We're even.
David,
I posted last night at around 6pm. Can you please post my response. (no need to post this of course.)
thanks
george
