Chimes to stop the changing clime

Posted by Bina Venkataraman November 26, 2008 12:28 PM

The sound of church bells ringing often signals celebration. But this week, outside at least 30 Episcopal churches in New England, it will also herald an impending danger -- global warming.

In a campaign to raise awareness about a changing climate, churches in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire pledged to each ring their church bells 350 times in a row at some point before the end of the month. Scientists have warned that the earth's atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide must be reduced to 350 parts per million or lower to stave off the worst impacts of global warming. Current levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are now estimated at more than 385 parts per million.

The campaign, run by the grassroots organization 350.org, aimed to sign up hundreds of churches across New England. 350.org is a youth-led global movement to address global warming.

Old North Church in Boston’s North End will ring its bell following its services on Sunday, and St. Peter’s Church in Weston rang its bells Monday evening.

  1. This is a fabulous idea to help get the word out about the urgency of addressing climate change! (For those interested in learning why it's urgent, there was a great article about some recent resarch at MIT published in TIME magazine last month. You should be able to find it at www.time.com, searching for the article by Bryan Walsh about John Sterman's work, and "What the Public Doesn't Get About Climate Change." ) Kudos to the churches, Bill McKibben and his team at www.350.org! Folks can also help get the word out by joining the Polar Bear Plunge into Walden Pond at 2 PM on December 6th. (Info at www.gwenet.org.)

  1. Great idea! And it won't be the first time church bells were rung to save the people... in 1456 when Halley's Comet was bright in the sky, it was viewed as a harbinger of death. The Pope ordered the church bells rung at noon every day to 1) scare the comet away and 2) alert the people to pray 'God save us from the comet and the Turks' (with whom they were at war with..... the church bells have rung every day at noon since.... though few know why :)

Let them ring again loud and clear!

  1. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. SCIENTIFIC THEORY = THEORY.

  1. More idiots falling for the "scientific concensus" which is an oxymoron in and of itself. All the scientific data shows the global temparatures have dropped in the last 10 years. In fact the planet was much warmer in the 1930's. What was the ppm count for CO2 then? It is also a fact that water vapor is the most prolific greenhouse gas out there and CO2 amounts are miniscule compared to that. Lets start by reducing our water vapor emmisions and ban hydrogen based energy technology!!!

I do believe in making as little impact on the environment as possible but this lunacy regarding CO2 is really really stupid. Just ask the politicians that have enormous carbon footprints like A Gore. If they really believed this bunkum they would set an example, wouldn't they?

  1. Global Warming. The sky is falling. 10 minutes from Midnight. A few of the many warnings that have been generated in the last 30 years.
In the 1960's , you could tell the plane was within 300 miles of London, Paris, Rome, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, LAX, etc by the dark cloud of soot hanging over the cities. It was not unusual to have over 200 inches of snow fall on Eastern Canada.
In the 1970's, the worry was of the coming Ice Age. Average annual global temperatures were dropping. Newsweek predicted that the earth would be engulfed by an "Ice Age" in the near future.
Ozone cover over Antartica was normal.
The keepers of Mother Earth have forced the clean up of the environment at a very large economic cost. We are now being warned about Global Warming and that more money is required to solve the problem.
Wait a minute, we spent money to clean up the air and we went from an Ice Age to a Global Warming catastrophe?
It appears that maybe the cleaning up of the air as led to Global Warming, that is good since our heating bills will be lower, farmers could get an extra crop each year, fewer ice and snow caused automobile accidents.
    Burn, Baby, Burn.
Heat that atmosphere and bring on economic prosperity.

  1. How urgent is it?
Does it make any different if we answer the alarm in December, or in 2009?
Important is not the same as urgent.

  1. Global Warming is not an issue. It's a natural earth cycle, man has nothing to do with it. Ringing church bells will have more effect on global CO2 levels than anything mankind tries to do. Get ready for a long cold winter New England.

  1. Moonbats making money for Al Gore. Ring them bells.

  1. I guess these churches can't fill their congregations by preaching the diluted word of God because they are so filled up with political correctness they have lost all sense on what it means to be Christian. What does global warming have to do with the cause and following of Christ? Sound Christian doctrine would state that preaching Christ and him crucified would be a good start.. A solid faith statement would be a good place to work from like say, "The Apostles Creed." If these churches started to preach Christ and his love they would have no need to ring their bells for global warming. One more thought all the big polluters are in Asia. I don't think they will hear nor care about the church bells chiming in New England

  1. Junk science. It is a manifestation of mankind egocentric perception of himself. Al Gore should give back the Nobel prize and get a job. Weather is cyclical. In fact there's a consensus that we're in for a decade of Global cooling. Go figure.

  1. If anybody really thinks there is something they can do to prevent global warming;
    1) Determine exactly how many tons of CO2 emissions are created world wide.
    2) Determine how much is created by you yourself as a percentage of the entire world.
    3) Eliminate your emissions and determine how much more remains for the rest of the world to control.
This will accomplish more than banging church bells.

  1. Those poor church bells--- i'm saddened by the violent banging of them. I will be protesting against the ringing as it happens. Bells have feelings...maybe that just want to be dinged, nor donged? I hope the 'bellringer' has a clear conscience, your just a bunch of sick violent people! Ring-a-ding ding,=hate hate hate!

  1. Wow. Anti-science and anti-religion folks, all vying to see who can be more cynical and suspicious. All because some folks of faith care about God's Creation and want to express that love by making a public statement. Ain't that awful. Thanks as well to Paul Bahre who apparently can't stand the thought of some Christians holding to beliefs that don't fit his singular interpretation of what it means to be a Christian. There is more than one type of Christian Paul. My church rang the bell 350 times a few Sundays ago and it may even move us to try and make a difference in the world. If that offends folks, sorry. Try building up every once in awhile rather than always seeking to tear down. Try a little hope.

  1. One question for XENOPHONIC and others who believe the planet is getting colder. If that's true why are the both ice caps and all of the great glaciers shrinking at alarming rates? Why do the majority of serious scientists (including those from MIT) agree that not only is this a genuine problem but undeniably man-made? Where do you people get your information, the National Inquirer, Rush Limbaugh, both?

Total denial...yet another reason the Republican Party is in such desperate straights. Their members are totally out of touch with reality, not only in this country but around the world. God bless the churches for trying.
It's far better than anything suggested by most of those commenting (snidely) here.

Total denial...on countless fronts; a big reason the Republican Party is in such desperate straights. Many of their members have completely lost touch with the world around them.
God bless the churches for trying. It's a small step for sure. But far more helpful than pretending this problem doesn’t exist.

  1. Quite appropriate to ring bells for the ding dongs who buy into this scam...

  1. Global Warming (TM) is a brand name invented by Al Gore and propagated by our "entertainment" industry (which is really a carefully administered, well thought-out, form of mind / crowd control.)

Wake up America, your country is being taken away from you.

  1. Global warming is a misnomer--the correct term is CLIMATE CHANGE, which means fluctuations in the temperature into extremes of hot and cold. Perhaps a reading of the 4 reports issued by the International Panel on Climate Change would help convince skeptics of the reality of climate change. Of course 6 billion plus humans and our machinery affect our environment and climate. If there is arrogance in science, it is the arrogance of thinking we can continue to use machinery and technology with nary a thought to our responsibilities to one another and to the other living creatures on our planet.

  1. Not surprising they want to ring church bells. Gullible Warming: the new religion for Left wing moonbats. Those who don't believe in God will believe in anything.

  1. # 15- "...undeniably man-made?"

Where is the proof?- the undeniable proof?

    News-flash- there isn't any.

  1. Rudderman: Parts of the Earth get warmer while other parts of the Earth get cooler. It's cyclical. The hottest temperature recorded on Earth occured Over 100 years ago. The hottest temperature in the USA occured nearly 100 years ago. Finally I don't care if a scientist is from MIT or Podunk University. (Al Gore is from Neither) Weather is cyclical. I recently read an article about the dinasaurs and their extinction. There was one passage "Off course the Earth was much warmer then". Do you suppose there was too much Dinasaur faltulence that contributed to that global warming????

  1. "Global warming is a misnomer--the correct term is CLIMATE CHANGE, which means fluctuations in the temperature into extremes of hot and cold.."

What a load of BS. Since the hysterical predictions of global warming have been proven flat wrong, we are now told ANY "climate change" proves their theory.
Unfortunately, anyone can study history and learn that the climate has always changed, often radically.

Posted by Bob November 27, 08 11:29 PM
  1. Global Warming = The New Religion Let's all accept the tenets:
That plants and animals including humans that adapt to temperature changes of 30 degrees or more per day, cannot adapt to fractions of a degree per decade...
That "Climate Change" is new and has never occurred before. That no one knows what the weather will be two weeks from now, but predicting temperatures two centuries ahead demonstrates sound scientific method. That if a rise in CO2 means a temperature rise of "X", then a reduction in CO2 means a temperature drop of... "Heck how should I know?"... The global warming/climate change hoax is a gullibility test. Believe that and you will believe anything.

  1. for the love of common sense, do a little more research before you start ringing all these church bells. our climate has been changing for 10's of thousands or years.
of course it makes sense to reduce all these emissions, etc. but stop trying to tie this to 'climate change'. funny how it used to be called 'global warming' until it became obvious to everyone that it wasn't ONLY getting warmer out... next it will be called 'climate stagnation' once we have a few years in a row of moderate temperatures.

  1. You know when I was a kid, it was acid rain is gonna get you. When I was a teenager it was the Amazon Jungle is gonna disappear and there will no oxygen left on Earth. Now it is Global Warming. The next one for my kids will be space trash. Satellites falling to Earth, they are gonna get you! I haven't been afraid of the boogeyman in years and neither should anyone else.

  1. What does believing in god have to do with understanding that our climate is changing? I am a cathlolic, but I understand when and where to apply my faith. Humans and the use of technology is accelearting climate changes that could have catestrophoc affects on the enviroment. There is evidence supported by studies detailing these changes. Open your mind, and do a little research.
I support the churches for trying to get a message out to the people. Its time to stand up and make a change.
