Hey, Obama: Green ideas from science

Posted by Erin Ailworth November 25, 2008 11:38 AM

The Union of Concerned Scientists, a Cambridge-based non-profit that works for a "healthy environment and safer world," got together with a bunch of other environmental groups to put together a 340-page "prescription" for the new administration to respond to economic woes, as well as environmental and national security concerns.

The document, which can be found at www.saveourenvironment.org, was delivered to president-elect Barack Obama's transition team late Monday, according to an email from the UCS.

In that email, UCS president Kevin Knobloch issued the following statement:

President-elect Obama has a popular mandate to move expeditiously to reduce our dependence on oil, curb global warming pollution, and pull the country out of recession. We're encouraged that he has signaled that his first order of business will be developing an economic investment package that will include investments in renewable energy and an upgrade and expansion of the electricity transmission grid, generating millions of new jobs. With his strong statement last week, President-elect Obama also communicated his intent to immediately begin working with congressional leaders to craft a strong climate bill. Congress must promptly pass legislation reducing U.S. global warming emissions at least 80 percent by mid-century to give us a chance to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The president-elect understands this. His leadership will be paramount to pushing the right bill through Congress. The new administration also must restore scientific integrity in the federal government. Our policymakers need unfettered, independent science to make the right decisions. Science has been under siege during the past eight years. Political appointees have run roughshod over federal scientists, altering or suppressing their findings or skewing them to fit the administration's agenda. We are heartened that President-elect Obama has said that under his administration, government decisions will be based on the best available science, not on ideology. Finally, President-elect Obama has pledged to replace the culture of secrecy at federal science agencies with one of openness. When decisions are made in the open, it is much more difficult to suppress or manipulate scientific information to justify predetermined decisions. The president-elect must act quickly to create a thriving federal scientific enterprise.

  1. Dear Mr. Obama and Transition Team:

    PLEASE:
Begin solving America’s Energy by investing in CLEAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS.
    1. We will Stimulate the Economy immediately
    2. We will Employ many American Workers
    3. We will Reduce our Oil Consumption

If we start building MANY NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS simultaneously, we will reduce Unemployment for years to come. There will be GREAT BENEFITS for all.

  1. Union of Concerned Scientiists: when exactly did "global warming" become "climate change"? Nobody seems able or willing to answer this question for me.

  1. Edgar. In 1998 the Union of Concerned Scientists showed the hockey stick graph and said computer models predicted that the temperature would increase each and every year until we decreased CO2 emmisions.
Since 1998 was the hotest year on record, they had to change the name to climate change to keep their multi Billion dollar scam going

  1. The Union of Concerned Scientists is not an impartial scientific body. The fact that they described themselves as "Concerned" is proof. Science is not "concerned". It is a matter of discovery and truth. They deliberately mislead the public by using their credentials as scientists to push an opinion or a "concern".

For example, Obama has no "mandate" as they describe. He only got 52% of the vote and it certainly wasn't for his stance on global warming or energy. The economy , the war and the distrust that Bush created in Republicans (deservedly so) had much more to do with his victory than the "concerns" of these scientists. THe fact they make such a distortion is reason for anyone to be "concerned" about whatever these people are pushuing.

  1. Who's going to read 340 pages? It better be an exciting book!

  1. Dear Mr. Obama and Transition Team:

PLEASE begin solving America's energy by investing in the TRULY CLEAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT IN THE SKY (THE SUN). Build MORE solar panels NOW.
    1. We will stimulate the economy immediately.
    2. We will employ many American workers.
    3. We will reduce our oil and coal consumption.
    4. We will reduce the amount of nuclear waste to be dealt with.

PLEASE build more SOLAR PANEL FACTORIES, solar power IS nuclear power but the fuel is free and the reactor disposes of its own waste. The fuel doesn't have to be mined or transported. Its automatically delivered to the "power plant" which has no moving parts and uses no water. ITS A NO BRAINER.

  1. The Union of Concerned Scientists doesn't pretend to be an impartial scientific body, as opposed to the astroturfing oil-company-funded pretenders (and their naive dupes) out there chanting have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife-yet type of questions and sticking their fingers in their ears to any replies.

Scientists are human beings, and can be -- and often should be -- concerned about their discoveries, particularly when the results are so important ... and when there are powerful forces who have huge financial interests in throwing intentionally-misleading "doubt" on those discoveries.
