When do you think the final word is going to come on Cape Wind? And what will it be?

Ever since 2001 when the 130-turbine Nantucket Sound project was first announced, the question has loomed. There have been scores of environmental studies, tons of controversy, a book, new federal rules, gossip that would blow your socks off, and still, no final decision from the federal government.

This week, members of the Massachusetts Legislature – 107 in total – signed onto a letter to U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar urging him to approve Cape Wind “as soon as possible” according to a press release. Meanwhile, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, the project’s main opposition group has kept up the pressure opposing it on grounds from aesthetics to aviation concerns.

There already is a largely positive federal environmental review. Salazar is expected to issue a final word on Cape Wind in the “near future” according to Cape Wind. As a reporter covering the issue, I feel I’ve been waiting for a decision for years. And I’m weary.

So let’s play. Pick a date. The winner will bask in the knowledge they called the decision on the nation’s first offshore wind farm right.
