Local animal rescue team in typhoon-ravaged Philippines

Animal rescuers from the Cape Cod-based International Fund for Animal Welfare are saving animals in the storm-ravaged Philippines.
Last weekend, Ketsana, which later strengthened to a typhoon, slammed into the Philippines, killing at least 245 people and forcing the evacuation of 567,000. Today, typhoon Parma avoided a direct hit on Manila, but officials were deeply worried about extensive flooding there and through the rest of the islands, according to a CNN report. Enormous numbers of people are without food or water.

Ever since Dick Green of Yarmouth and Michael Booth of Sandwich arrived on the Sept. 29th at the request of the local government and animal welfare groups, they have been busy saving animals – mostly dogs – from floodwaters and rubble. Booth is blogging about the situation at http://animalrescue.typepad.com/animal_rescue_blog/
Once Parma passes, the group wants to ratchet up efforts to save companion animals and help with backyard livestock. They also will likely focus efforts on separating animals from food areas at evacuation sites as animals and people are living together in many of them now.
Yesterday, IFAW helped clean up an animal swelter with 240 animals, most that arrived after the storm of through rescue.

it breaks my heart to know that these animals are so helpless and in need of help...in a place where they are already in need of helpl, this typhoon has made it worse for the people and those animals...
I wish i could help (in canada)... I am very thankful to you and your organization of helping out these animals... they have no voice and with your help and care they have a chance to have a new start....this typhoon will hopefully turn out to be a positive outcome for all of us to come together and help each other and those in need...
god bless
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. "
-Barack Obama
So nthey are helping the animals. What about the people? And please, let's not start importing Phillipine strays to Mass. like all the strays brought here from everywhere else.
Charlie - There are plenty of groups in the Phillipines helping people affected by this tragedy. Some people have a passion for helping animals, and that shouldn't be condemned. Justice isn't a finite commodity reserved only for humans. Kindness toward any of God's creatures should be praised.
I agree with Charlie. Why aren't we helping the people? Animals are cute, and can not help themselves, but if we do not help the people first, how are we going to be able to advocate for these animals if all of the people in the world are dying of infectious disseases and starving because of lack of food. Our first priority should be to save the people in third world countries, and the people in the US who are homeless, jobless, and foodless.
Animals have as much right to be resued in times like these. These are living creatures who feel too you know. Unlike people they don't have much choices to work with. They rely soley on us people to help them. We should help whoever we can, man or animal wherever we are. Before you start worrying about world hunger why don't you do something and start helping someone yourself. You people are nagging on people who are actually doing something. All life is valuable. Maybe not in your eyes, but it is in God's.
People,
I have worked in the Philippines for several years. You have no idea how poor most people really are. Dogs, cats and furry animals are the last thing on the minds of the officals and the people. If the people of the Luzon are not helped first, it will not matter if the dogs are rescued. The situation is serious. my co-worker is in the Islands now. People are in danger of disease, starvation, mud slides and drowning. Send money to the Philippine Red Cross. Once the people are settled they can focus on the animals and livestock. Right now children are in real danger. They cannot swim. Dogs can.
I just returned from the Philippines having worked as a volunteer with IFAW . For those of you concerned about the people, we actually gave out more human relief than animal, assisting the military and local groups to provide these supplies for people. IFAW is a professional group that is aware of the human suffering and the need to address that even as an animal wefare group. I can tell you first hand that people are still concerned about their animals. Sometimes the best way to help animals is to help their owners first. Also, livestock are very important to the livlihood of many people. They cannot afford to loose those animals.
You know, I was about to post some negative comments on these people and then I realized I have not even donated a single centavo to the flood victims - shame on me.
So in my opinion, mitch is right and people who haven't done anything should stop nagging on people who are 'actually doing something'. These people are somewhat 'risking their lives' for what they believe in. Can you compare that to a hundred peso or even a thousand peso donation (to a human OR an animal)? Didn't think so too.
My opinion about the help humans or animals debate? hahaha who cares? Millions or probably billions of pesos are wasted each year to corruption. Ever heard about how much the president's dinner cost when she goes country hopping? How about this, lets say suddenly I form a group of people to save some plants in Marikina, what do you care people? It's my life, and if I posted this on a different blog you wouldn't care for my life either, haha. Hey if you want to make a difference then be my guest, how about lets see you risk something more than you're money, and then just for fun we'll all post some negative comments on you're show to boost up you're morale.
This isn't nagging. We should not be concerned with animals being helped until we can safely say that all of the humans are fed and living in a safe environment. And this is not a debate about the president spending money because the issue at hand is animals being helped. I know that I too am concerned with the well being of my own animal and most animals I see, but I am more concerned when I walk down the street and see a mother and her child looking through the trash for something to eat. Animals are born to live and survive in the wild. They are hunters and fighters. Humans need more nourishment and other people to care about them.
