Common climate campers face court again
Those climate campers are in trouble again.
Scores of university students are spending each Sunday night camping out on Boston Common in hopes of convincing Governor Deval Patrick to introduce a bill to re-power the state with 100 percent clean electricity by 2020.
But camping in Boston Common is apparently illegal. So last night, for the second week in a row, the campers were told they would receive summons to appear in court, according to a spokesman from the Leadership Council. Climate activist Bill McKibben was among the group. In all, 122 people received summons, according to the group. The Boston Police Department had no report yet on the incident when I called.
Tomorrow the group is meeting with Gov. Deval Patrick to try and convince him to file that climate bill.
Here's my previous post: http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/green/greenblog/2009/11/climate_campers_on_common_to_g.html

I thought Boston Common was for all citizens to enjoy .
30 days in a prison farm will convince them to grow up. A lousy court summons with no punishment will only convince them to continue.
oh no..misinformed idealogical students egging the state (eventually feds) to placate. No problem, in exhange, cap and trade. The propaganda machine is working and these kids are sadly clueless.
I'm all for clean electricity, but their behavior is ridiculous. The Boston Common is off limits overnight. That applies to everybody.
Thank you, Globe Business Team, for continuing to cover the climate campers. I sincerely hope you will keep it up.
Far from being "misinformed", this group of students is sadly very well informed in regard to the ramifications for their generation should the process of transitioning our country to cleaner energy sources continue at its current snail's pace. These students are putting themselves on the line in the hope of catalyzing some concrete action from our elected officials. We need to get going on this transition and there is no reason why Massachusetts cannot be in a leadership role.
Negative commenters, instead of making blind assumptions about these young people, how about stopping by the Common (Park Street end) next Sunday evening and hearing for yourselves exactly what it is they're trying to accomplish? These are GREAT kids and they in fact are attracting quite a lot of support from their respective communities.
Archimedes: Define "grow up." Tell us what do you do that's as tough as sleeping on the ground in November. And, come to think of it, why should 19-year-olds act like 39-year-olds anyway? Who knows, some of them might actually learn from such an experience and become engaged citizens, who, like read, and talk, and vote....Nah-h-h, let's just lock em up.
The Common has an 11 pm curfew, for everyone, for safety reasons.
And the irony is that camping damages the Common -- but I guess when you are morally superior, it's OK to damage public property and break the rules that apply to everyone else.
Perhaps "CJ" would be willing to provide concrete evidence of the climate campers' "damaging" of public property. How, exactly, are they damaging the Common?
Thank you in advance.
No offense CJ, but if we don't stop climate change, the Boston Commons is going to be damaged anyways, most likely because it will be underwater..try and look at the bigger picture here: These teens are fighting so that you can go on living your comfy law-abiding life and ignore the horrible things happening around you, try and have a little respect please.
How is that ironic? If I'm going to be labeled "misinformed" then please explain how camping on the common damages it and how it's ironic.
If you believe cap and trade is any sort of solution to ANY problem, then the propaganda machine is working on you.
I sleep better at night on the ground knowing that I'm at least trying to help the world rather than shutting my eyes in my warm bed to the problems that we will all soon be forced to face.
Yes, they're breaking the law.
So did Gandhi. So did Rosa Parks. So did Martin Luther King, Jr. These students and community leaders are trespassing in the same spirit that those historical grandfathers and grandmothers of civil disobedience broke other laws.
They're doing so because all of our futures -- including the people who disagree with their tactics, whether they like it or not -- depend on drastic climate action by our leaders immediately to prevent runaway climate change.
My congratulations and solidarity to the climate campers -- we should all be so courageous.
CJ: I have slept out on the commons for the past two sundays and have seen no damage what so ever done to commons. The only damage I see is that being done by dirty energy and people who refuse to recognize the implications our current infrasturcture has on our future. Maybe you could come by and check out the "damage" being done to the commons this sunday.
CJ complains that the students are damaging the Common. But CJ, don't you realize that the filthy electricity they are protesting is DESTROYING THE PLANET? And just who is being "morally superior" here? Sounds to me like it's you, CJ!
Cj would instead like a tea party rally like they had in DC, where they left boatloads of trash all over the place and complained PUBLIC transportation didn't cater to them enough while telling the government to keep their hands of their medicare and unemployment.ROTFLMAO
