Green Mountain College Replaces Lawn with Garden

Students at Green Mountain College in Vermont recently ripped up the lawn in front of a farmhouse owned by the school into a vegetable garden. The permaculture garden has 12 raised beds filled with fruits and vegetables. The overall project, including the beds, cold frames, and a grape trellis were designed by students and alumni. Students in the Edible Landscaping class built and planted the garden as part of their coursework. "Edible gardens can be visually appealing, a lot more interesting than grass,? said Philip Ackerman-Leist, director of the College's Farm & Food Project.
