Kenya health workers vow to continue strike
NAIROBI, Kenya—Kenya's public health workers say that the government must meet their demands before they will end their strike.
About 2,000 health workers attended Friday's demonstration outside the Ministry of Health to protest low wages and poor conditions. The government announced Thursday that it fired 25,000 workers who defied an order to return to work.
Some 40,000 health workers nationwide went on strike on March 1 to protest low pay and poor working conditions.
Kenyan media has attributed five deaths to the strike already, although doctors say they are still treating emergency cases.
Workers say decades of under-investment in health care has left public services so poor that sometimes three patients share a bed and women give birth on the floor.
