ANN ARBOR, Mich.—An external investigation is under way into a six-month delay in reporting to police the discovery of suspected child pornography on a computer flash drive in a locked University of Michigan hospital lounge.

AnnArbor.com reports ( http://bit.ly/HsCVNm) Friday that the school has selected the law firm Latham & Watkins to lead the review. They have agreed that the cost of the review will not exceed $395,000.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents ordered an external investigation in February.

An internal investigation into the delay determined a hospital attorney aware of the discovery in May decided after a month that there wasn't enough evidence to tell police.

Police were notified in November. Charges were brought against a male resident physician in December.
