I recently blogged about the Healthier Side of Fastfoods and that new federal regulations will require restaurants with 20 or more locations (chain restaurants) to post the calories of their menu items on their menu boards later this fall. McDonald's has decided to get a jump on the consumer’s desire to “know what they are ordering” before they place their order. Starting this month, McDonald's will begin listing calorie information at their restaurants and drive-thru menu boards to help consumers make informed choices.
While McDonald's currently offers apple slices, fat free milk, and grilled chicken salads to help consumers order menu items that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010, they will also be testing additional healthier foods to be potentially launched in 2013.
Here are some options that could be tested at a McDonald's near you:
• More seasonal fruit and vegetables options, such as blueberries and cucumbers, during peak seasons;
• Additional produce side options and grilled chicken choices for Happy Meals;
• The McWrap featuring fresh vegetables starting at 350 calories; and
• New breakfast choices, including an egg-white breakfast sandwich on an English muffin made with 8 grams of whole grain.
Stay tuned as similar, large chain restaurants will likely also begin posting the calories on their menus as well as introducing healthier fare to attract health conscious consumers to pick up dinner at the drive thru.
