I'm on vacation this week. And while this is great for my mind, I'm hoping it isn't terrible for my body.

I love vacations. They break you out of your regular routine, allow you to sleep in (as long as my toddler decides to sleep, that is), and generally recharge your batteries. These are all wonderful things. However, for me, vacation also means I am away from my gym.

This is both good and bad.

Here are my pros and cons of not being able to exercise at my regularly scheduled time and place:

Pros:
I must do something different. I cannot rely on my routine of treadmill, weights, and stretching to burn calories and hit my fitness goals.

It forces me to really pay attention to what I am eating. Since I am not burning as many calories with my workouts (according to my FitBit), I need to be extra careful about what I ingest.

Time away makes the heart grow fonder. No really, this time away is making me love my gym even more than I already did.

Cons:
I've got to get really creative to burn as many calories as I normally do in one early-morning session at the gym.

Since I'm not on my regular schedule, I've got to make sure I don't fall into my previous vacation mindset of: "I'm on vacation, therefore I can sleep/eat/relax" more than usual.

I don't have anyone else around to push me. I have several colleagues who go to the gym in the morning with me. If I miss a day, they ask me why. Was I sick? Was I on vacation? Is everything OK? In their own way, those simple questions help me drag myself out of bed every morning and make it to the gym. It's nice to see my gym buddies.

For now, I'll go back to my regularly-scheduled vacation and try my hand at pilates and bootcamp (which nearly killed me, but that's for another post.). Plus, I'm investigating a Zumba class I want to try and this time-off allows me to try out a class mid-day, which I wouldn't be able to do while working in the office.

How do you stay in shape while on vacation? What are your secrets for vacation success?
