The Boston Public Health Commission has launched a citywide campaign today in response to a call from Mayor Menino for the city of Boston to lose 1 million pounds.

On the city's website, you'll be able to log in to record your starting weight and specific goals, and track your progress. The site, called Bostonmovesforhealth.org, also includes a database of places people can go to exercise, workout programs to try, and more.

About half of the adults living in Boston are overweight or obese, according to the Boston Public Health commission. This site, which is free, hopes to help lower that number.

All you have to do is create an account and log your information to get started.

Here's how the Boston Public Health Commission describes the campaign:

Boston Moves for Health is an ambitious campaign launched by Mayor Thomas M. Menino in April 2012 to improve the health and fitness of the city of Boston. As part of the initiative, the mayor has challenged residents to lose one million pounds and move (walk, run, hop, swim, skip!) 10 million miles.

You can join the challenge for free at www.BostonMovesForHealth.org. This site allows you to create a profile, set and track personal health goals, map walks and runs, find new workout routines, get nutrition tips, and team up with friends to coordinate group activities and support your friends and neighbors along the way to a healthier lifestyle. And, you can set up email reminders and alerts with suggested workout routines.

BostonMovesForHealth.org also features a community calendar with healthy and fun events and activities all over the city, and there is a resource directory of places to get out and get active in Boston.

You can sign up to use the site by going to www.BostonMovesForHealth.org. Read more about the program in today's Boston Globe on bostonglobe.com.
