Learning to push your limits

When I started running, I wondered if my short legs would ever move the way I wanted them to.

I have the heart and drive of someone who could run a marathon, even though I have the training and stamina of a novice.

I could have just decided to keep running the way I was, comfortably, at an easy pace, not pushing my body past where it felt like it could go.

But a friend's comment asking me, why not "push it" made me think. Maybe I need to live just outside of the place where I feel comfortable. That's where the real work is, isn't it?

I've been starting slowly, with little tweaks: Could I do one more mile? Could I hold my #plankADay for just 10 seconds more? Could I try something new that made me nervous -- vulnerable -- (yes, Craig and Jeff, this is where you may have convinced me to do a Spartan Race.)

For me, it's that last one that's most important. When I'm most vulnerable, I have found I prepare the most. I try as hard as I can to prepare for something so as not to embarrass myself. Or fail. We all know how much I love failing.

I know that's what works for me. It's a tried and true method. And yet, it's that act of pushing myself to get there that seems so hard.

But, I guess, that in itself is an act of "pushing it," too.
