SHOPPING-FOR-MOTHERS DAY
Moms who could use a play date would do well to head to the Mommies Who Shop event tonight at the Community House of Hamilton and Wenham. A $20 ticket gets you wine and hors d'oeuvres, complimentary spa treatments, and discounted clothes, toys, and other goodies for kids, moms, and expecting moms. The roster of mostly local participating independent designers includes Tamara Handbags, M. Flynn Accessories, and Little Chickie Wear. The Community House is at 284 Bay Road, South Hamilton, 978-468-4818. For more information, see www.mommieswhoshop.com.

DISCOUNTS ON DRESSES AND MORE
After 18 years of matching girls with bat mitzvah and party dresses, Imagine (50 Winchester St., Newton, 617-332-0772, www.imaginewear.com) will be closing its doors at the end of June. (Owner Pamela Richlin is retiring.) The markdowns have already begun: During May, accessories and gifts are 10 percent off, apparel under $200 is 15 percent off, and apparel over $200 is 20 percent off. (The discounts will likely get steeper next month.) Find dresses by Jessica McClintock and CW Designs as well as sportswear in girls, preteen, and juniors sizes.

A CONSIGNMENT ASSIGNMENT
Despite your best intentions, you've dropped the ball on a Mother's Day present. If Mom likes jewelry, head to the high-end consignment shop Garage Sale (55 Waltham St., Boston, 617-482-7044), which until Sunday is taking an additional 20 percent off its well-chosen selection of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings that already sell for roughly half of retail price. Find Nava Zahavi, Love Heals, Jeanine Payer, Lisa Jenks, Alexis Bittar, and others. Mom need never know you waited till the last minute.

DON'T OVERLOOK UNDERGARMENTS
Few things make us feel quite as pampered as do fancy undergarments; these lean times make them harder to justify. So we'll be browsing the sale at La Perla (250 Boylston St., Boston, 617-423-5709, www.laperla.com) in the hope of finding a little something to splurge on. Select lingerie, sleepwear, and swimsuits are now 40 percent off, while last season's ready-to-wear (a small selection of sweaters, tops, skirts, and dresses) is 75 percent off. Find sale items online as well.

CUT COSTS WITH SPECIAL TREATMENT
Dressing well on a budget might not be so hard, but keeping your tresses in order is a challenge of a different magnitude. We're heading to Studio for Hair (464 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, 617-262-2029), where, each Wednesday and Thursday in May and June, co-owner and master stylist Agostino Lombardi is offering a complimentary haircut (worth $70) with any color service ($70-$120). Don't need a color? How about a free reconditioning treatment (worth $25) or a gloss hair treatment ($40) with any haircut? Our wallets like that almost as much as our hair does.
