Flash-sale shopping tips from Gilt MAN's Jared Flint
Happy holiday Monday. Hopefully the extent of your laboring today is browsing (or shopping) the Web. In that spirit, I've turned today's post over to Jared Flint, Style Editor at Gilt MAN, who has graciously given some tips for guys looking to find great deals on flash sale sites. (Find more style advice and inspiration at Gilt MANual). Note: These tips apply to Gilt, but can be applied to just about any flash sale site you like.
1. Get organized. Check the calendar of upcoming sales to see when your favorite brands are scheduled to go live. You can then plan your weekly schedule accordingly.
2. Check your email. Gilt (and other flash sale sites) send out an email 10 minutes before all sales go live. Sign in early and be ready to hit that refresh button right at 12 p.m. EST (the time Gilt sales start) to make sure you don't miss out.
3. Don’t be afraid of the "Add to Cart" button. If you’re unsure about a certain piece, add it to your cart. It’ll automatically be reserved there for ten minutes, giving you some extra time to shop and ponder before pulling the trigger – and possibly missing out.
4. Be patient and add yourself to the wait list on those items that were snatched up early. Wait-listing pieces puts you in line to have first access as soon as they become available.
Need more pointers? Find Flint's flash-sale picks here. (Scroll down about halfway, to "The Perfect Cart." Check back tomorrow for brand new picks.)

Savers opens in Framingham
If you live out near Framingham and could use a Savers fix, you're in luck: The newest Mass. addition to the thrift chain opened its doors there last Thursday. The store has well-organized racks of men's, women's, kids', and home wares; sample prices include $3.99-$8.49 for most men's button-down shirts; most women's shoes for under $10; women's summer dresses for $3.99-$9.99 (a few go for a bit more); books for $0.69-$2.99. Clothing-wise, Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic are amply represented; spend some time in the racks, though, and you might come away with some good surprises. (There's also a donation center on site; for each pound of clothing or other items given, Savers pays the Epilepsy Foundation.) Savers is at 500 Cochituate Rd., Framingham, 508-875-0225.

Spotting the discounts near you
Daily deal sites and all the other web coupons out there have shown that you rarely have to pay full price for anything anymore, whether it's a hair cut, a meal at an upscale restaurant, or even Botox treatments. You can now add to your daily browsing The DealMap, which aggregates current and soon-to-be-offered deals from Groupon, Goldstar, Eversave, and Restaurant.com, along with discounts from individual stores. Deals are searchable by zip code or city, and though you might find a few repeats (the site is brand new), the variety is broad (discounts on theater and comedy club tickets, self-storage, acupuncture). Those who share deals on the site get points toward gift certificates and freebies.

When we heard about the recently opened Buffalo Exchange, where folks can trade in well-maintained duds for cash or store credit, we figured the selection would be small—how much local loot could one store amass in a few weeks? Clearly, we were wrong. The racks, which blend lower-end and higher-end, contemporary and vintage, are robust. (The store opened with inventory from other Buffalo Exchanges—there are locations in 14 states.) Prices are good (we spotted True Religion jeans for $55, a J. Crew lambswool sweater for $18, plenty of jackets between $20-$30), and the wares, from what we could see, are pristine. Fun shoes, too. Buffalo Exchange is at 238 Elm St., Somerville, 617-629-5383. www.buffaloexchange.com
Milton Academy's Swap-It this weekend
![]()
There are yard sales, and then there is Swap-It, the annual mega-sale at the Milton Academy ice hockey rink. Now in its 59th year, the sale, which runs this coming weekend, will have designer clothing, sporting equipment, baby gear and apparel, home goods, bicycles, and more at bargain prices. (There's really no swapping involved; the name has just stuck over the years.) Hours are Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (during the latter slot, items will be half-price); and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. (items will be $1 each) and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (pay $5 for a huge bag). Proceeds benefit Milton Academy’s K-8 classrooms, and some of the goods left after the sale are donated to a church in Haiti and to local charities. Milton Academy is at 170 Centre St., Milton, www.milton.edu. For more information, call 617-898-2516 or see www.milton.edu.
