British author, collector, and antiques-show host Judith Miller’s newest book puts the world of antiques in your hands. Antiques Handbook & Price Guide 2012-2013 covers the latest trends and prices for every category of antique — with information targeting both English and American markets, although all prices are in U.S. dollars and many objects are specifically American antiques.

The book includes descriptions and photographs of a staggering 8,000 antiques — organized into such categories as American Stoneware, Tea Tables, Quilts, Pocket Watches, Tiffany Lamps, and many, many more.

New with this book (Miller has authored 100 tomes) is a feature called “Judith Picks” (shown above), in which Miller gives a personal observation about a particular topic. In one example (Page 168) that will hit home with the New England audience, Miller describes a “splendid example” of an American Chippendale corner chair, made circa 1770 by a Massachusetts cabinetmaker. Prices for American Chippendale chairs are higher than English Chippendale chairs, Miller observes: “This is down to supply and demand. There were fewer wealthy patrons in the Colonies at this time.” Today, Miller figures, the chair will be in high demand, even with a price tag of $15,000-$25,000.

No matter how strong your interest is in antiques — from passionate to mild, or even simply appreciative of the fact that collecting is one of the most “green” practices around — you’ll enjoy the book, and a wonderful journey through decorative arts history. Published by Miller’s/Mitchell Beazley/An imprint of Octopus Books USA; $45, hardcover.
