September brings our annual renovations issue, which we think is a perfect complement to the changing autumnal season. The cover story, “Heritage Restored,” photographed by Michael J. Lee and written by editorial intern Loren Savini, features a 1670 farmhouse on the north shore of Boston — one of the oldest homes ever to appear in Design New England. Originally built in the hall-and-parlor style, it accommodated members of the same family for centuries before it was updated to support the current generation’s busy social lives while still respecting its impressive architectural past. From there, we travel to 1870 and Le Chalet, a Victorian cottage in Newport, Rhode Island, refurbished to award-winning historical specifications. Our next stop is a turn-of-the-20th-century lake house in Vermont where fond childhood memories of summers immersed in nature guided a renovation for a 21st-century family. And, finally a 2002 loft-style condominium in Boston’s South End goes from austere open concept to comfortable and personal in the hands of novelist Sue Miller and her partner author Douglas Bauer.
Also in the September/October issue, which will be in homes and online next week, are an interview with interior designer Mark Christofi, a preview of the restoration of the legendary gardens at Naumkeag, the sprawling Choate estate in the Berkshires, and a look at the region’s apple-growing heritage — just in time for apple-picking season.
