Free Garden Books!

Event: Free Garden Books! Saturday, May 16, 11a.m.-1 p.m.

Carol Stocker writes:
I can hardly believe this myself, but the Boston Globe will be giving away FREE copies of my $30 book, "The Boston Globe Illustrated New England Gardening Almanac," to the first 50 people who visit me at a book signing this Saturday at Boston Interiors, Route 1 South, in Saugus, starting at 11 a.m. That's 579 Broadway, Saugus. I will be on hand to answer gardening questions. But most of all, come for the books! Even if you don't garden yourself they make great gifts.

Carol Stocker on: What to do in the garden this week:
Everything is happening so fast right now that the garden seems to go through a week's worth of growth in a day. Now that May's chilly full moon is behind us for the month, you can start buying tender plants such as annuals, dahlias and even tomatoes. Hurry up and finish dividing perennials. Last call to seed lawns.

Garden Event: Eat Invasive Plants!

Carol Stocker writes: We were talking about recipes for garlic mustard and now I hear that The Wakefield Estate, 1493 Brush Hill Road, Milton, will host a Garlic Mustard Festival on Sunday, May 17; from 1:00-3:00 pm which will feature recipes and even tastings! Garlic weed (garlic mustard or Alliaria petiolata) is an aggressive, invasive plant originally cultivated for food medicinal use. Participants will learn to identify and pull the biennial plant, the best way to beat the problem. There will also scientific demonstrations showing the relationship between garlic weed and worms and samples of recipes that use garlic mustard as an ingredient. As I said, there will be some dishes to taste using garlic mustard as an ingredient.
