I've been trying out various new types of plants in my garden this summer. My favorites include Tropicanna Gold a new canna with yellow and green striped leaves. I liked this best of the several varieties Tesselaar Plants is marketing. The yellow flowers match the leaves. It was introduced a few years ago but I have no wintering over the tubers in my basement. I grow it in pots and put the pots in the basement without light or water after cutting down the 4 foot high foliage after first frost.
I'm also very pleased with the performance of Supertunia Watermelon Charm from Proven Winners which has produced a sheet of foot high blooms for me with little care and full sun.
I also like biochar, a soil enhancement which my tomatoes also seem to like. This is a char like substance made by baking woody biomass and mixing with worm castings. Once applied, it lasts a lifetime because it adds to soil texture and encourages rich soil life. It is modeled after agricultural practices of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization.
