> THE SETUP
HOLLY [Before the date,] I tried to figure out what would be the best thing to wear.
VIN My routine did not change, except I did not have time to do my daily jog.
HOLLY I was not looking forward to an hour on the T. It seemed to spoil the anticipation.
> AND, ACTION!
HOLLY I knew he was my date because he was the only man [in the restaurant] who was alone and over 30.
VIN She was tall, slim, and blond. [Though] she was dressed more for a BBQ than for a date, I found her reasonably attractive. I’m sure she was a real looker when she was younger.
HOLLY He looked like a gentleman, nicely dressed and groomed. He was calm and cordial.
VIN I didn’t get the sense she was nervous, the look on her face seemed more quizzical, like, I wonder what you are about.
> THE PLOT THICKENS
HOLLY Our lives started out in different places and cultures but ended up in similar places, and both were very interesting.
VIN We are two mature adults with many similar life experiences such as marriage and parenting. More specifically, Holly works with special-needs children, one of my children had a number of learning disabilities, and my late wife served as president of our local chapter on learning disabilities. So we had this subject in common.
HOLLY We talked about his and my various jobs and careers, his five kids and my three, and places we had been.
VIN [I was] quite comfortable and more so as the night wore on.
HOLLY I was very comfortable with Vin and it stayed that way.
VIN She impressed me with her knowledge and strength.
HOLLY [There were] no particular sparks. He was just a very nice man with a nice way about him.
> ROLL CREDITS
VIN At the end of the dinner it was getting late and we had been going at it for 3½ hours.
HOLLY The only deal breaker was that we lived far apart — on opposite sides of Boston.
VIN It wasn’t going to work because we were geographically incompatible.
HOLLY We said good night at the T and said it was too bad about the distance between us.
VIN We shook hands and wished each other well.
HOLLY It was a very pleasant parting.
