June 19: Dr. Carol Johnson, the new superintendent of Boston's public schools, was introduced to the city by mayor Thomas M. Menino and school committee chairwoman Dr. Elizabeth Reilinger. Johnson was recruited from Memphis, Tennessee, to run the oldest public school system in the United States and the largest school district in the region.
