September 22: Jockey Willie Martinez kept Brass Hat steady as the six-year-old (number 8, far left) held on to win the sixty-fifth running of the Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs. The bay gelding, which had disappointed in his two previous races, also won the coveted $500,000 prize and secured his place in local racing lore. The 2007 race drew 19,191, the largest crowd to watch live racing at Suffolk Downs since Cigar won the 1996 MassCup.
