The internet can be a distraction.

60% of companies report that they have needed to discipline employees because of their browsing habits, and more than 30% have actually had to fire people because of it.

The majority of organizations surveyed consider employee internet use to be a serious issue. About 60% have policies restricting internet use, while the remaining 40% actually block employees from accessing websites they see as “time-wasters.” Among the commonly blocked sites are Facebook, T...

This is Why We Do Cangrade

July 22, 2014

By Gershon Goren

You might have heard about what Cangrade does: we help businesses hire the best people by uniquely combining predictive analytics with an easy to use candidate management system that automatically grades every candidate, delivers an accurate prediction of future job performance, and lowers hiring costs.

This is WHAT we do. I want to take a step beyond that and tell you WHY we do it.

1. Hiring is broken

Imagine this situation: a manager asks an employee if they can come in to work on Saturday.

The employee might take offense to the request. “Why did you ask me? Is it because of [fill in the blank]? You don’t think I have a life outside of work?”

The manager might then take offense to a no. “You think you’re too good to work on a Saturday? I have to come in to work. Are you really committed to this job?”

Even a simple exchange like this can easily go wrong. And it can snowball into further di...

Does Practice Really Make Perfect?

July 09, 2014

By Greg Willard

You have probably heard or read about Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000 hour rule”. If you practice doing something for 10,000 hours you will become an expert. You could do this in just under 5 years if you put in 8 hours a day 5 days a week (or 5½ hours every day). Why not get started right now?

This all sounds about right. The most successful people in many areas have indeed put in many hours of practice. But is this why they are so successful?

Let’s consider some basic logic:

  • A necessary condition

When candidates are interviewed for jobs or admissions, we can generally assume that they aren’t all equally qualified—there is a distribution. For example, it might be the case that half are above average and half are below average.

Because there is a distribution, we also know (at least intuitively) that there are probabilities involved. Using this example:

  • If you randomly select one candidate to interview, the probability that they are above average is ½
  • With 2 candidates, the probability
  • ...

How to Cheat a Psychological Assessment

June 17, 2014

By Greg Willard

Psychological assessment is a popular method of learning about people. Assessments come in a variety of formats, for example you might be given a series of statements and asked to indicate how much you agree or disagree with each, or you might be given lists of different options to choose from. Unlike the information we usually gather in everyday life when we want to learn more about a person, these specific systems gather information about a person that can be directly compared, interpreted,...

Bytes is Bytes

June 17, 2014

By mjmichaels

Seemed like a simple Jira, an easy bug fix to check off my list - a problem with our JDBC PreparedStatement#setByte().  What followed was the proverbial can of worms.  I started to think about and overthink BINARY data. How is it used?  What is stored in BINARY fields?  How do people insert data into BINARY fields?

I found the behavior of NuoDB to be odd, not necessarily wrong, but odd.

First of all, it's worthy to note that one way NuoDB differs from other SQL databases, is that BINARY and VARBINARY (or BINARY
