This past week, three of our showroom consultants were hosted for several days by MTI Baths near Atlanta. MTI is well known for its high quality, made in America, custom bath products that range from soaking tubs to air baths to shower bases and more. While MTI has spent decades focusing on the creation of innovative products of the very best quality, they should also be recognized for their company-wide commitment to expressing gratitude. “We have made a careful study...

18k gold wedding bands bostonAlarm systems are generally a good idea these days, not just to secure your valuables, but for personal protection as well. There are a plethora of alarm companies out selling their products these days and many of them can provide decent protection, however you should generally look for larger firms to deal with.  This is because they will have both better response times (i.e. staff on duty all the time)  and better resources to deal with alarm problems.  Some fly by night guy who comes in and sets up

Jewelry Security

March 30, 2013

By noreply@blogger.com (Daniel Spirer)

Men's wedding band with diamond bostonI have, unfortunately, talked to more and more customers recently who have had to deal with thefts at their homes, so I thought I would write a couple of articles about this issue.  The first thing of course is that you should have insurance, but I'm going to leave that issue for the third article in this series. In this one I'm going to talk about some practical measures for safeguarding your property.

As a jeweler I've always had to deal with issues around security. It is simply a part of my job

Rainbow moonstone clasp in Boston and Cambridge
Rainbow Moonstone, 18k Gold Clasp
The clasp pictured here is 18k yellow gold with a rainbow moonstone.  Rainbow moonstones are technically not moonstones although, like moonstones, they are in the feldspar family of gem materials.  Rainbow moonstone is a trade name that came about because instead of the typical milky white or bluish sheen floating over regular moonstones, these had pinks, purples, yellow or oranges as highlights.  They have always been a favorite of mine and my wife owns a number of

Beautiful triangular opal earrings boston/cambridge
18k yellow gold, Ethiopian opals and diamonds
A long time ago I learned that it is always better to not try to do everything yourself.  Despite the fact that I am an extremely well rounded jeweler in terms of my skills, there are certain things that, while I know how to do them, I realize it is far better to let someone with the proper skills (and patience) take care of.  I have belonged to a couple of jewelery news groups on the web and I was always amazed at what some of the "jewelers" (I use that term loosely

Gold Prices

18k gold swirl earrings with pearls
18k gold "Pearl Swirls"
I'm not sure how many of you follow the gold market as closely as I (and most other jewelers) do, and frankly I never used to have to follow it as much myself.  Gold prices remained fairly stable for years and while they changed on a daily basis, we never used to see the kinds of swings that have occurred in the last few years. However with the stratospheric heights gold has risen to in the last few years it has become more and more important to watch where gold is going.

New Gemstones, What Fun

February 27, 2013

18k wirey yellow gold ring with round ruby. About once a year, when it's possible, I like to get up to see my primary gemstone suppliers who are located not far from Boston.  I like to do this for a variety of reasons, the first of which is that they are friends as well and it's always nice to get together, even if only for a few hours. The second is that, while they are happy to come down and see me with some of their merchandise if I ask them to, they have so much merchandise that they can never bring it all down.  And quite frankly, even
