Eaglets out of the nest!

June 09, 2014

By Don Kleiner

It is easy to mark the progression of the season by the things that happen outdoors and today was one of those annual milestones. I was on a striper fishing trip and in the course of the morning passed three eagle nests. Fishing near the first nest I could see two heads over the side for a few minutes. As we passed the second both chicks were out of the nest perched on a nearby limb.

Loons up close

June 06, 2014

By Don Kleiner

The best of spring fishing is underway with sight fishing for nesting bass; great fun with a fly rod. As I move along the shoreline searching for those beds I meet the loons who are right now searching out their nesting sites. I see at least a few every trip out some near familiar nest sites others in places I am surprised to see them.

Lost?

June 01, 2014

By Don Kleiner

I had the day off and the weather was perfect. A fishing trip was in order; after all I do not always get to have a rod in my hands on such a perfect morning. I fished Quantabacook Lake in Searsmont; I fish there every few years and rarely with clients because it is so far away to make into a half day trip.

Bass are on the beds

May 29, 2014

By Don Kleiner

Now is the time for some of the most interesting bass fishing of the year. I was on one of my favorite ponds yesterday and the bass were very close to actively defending those depressions in the bottom. I saw many although only a few had fish on them. I am guessing that the next couple of warm sunny days will make all of the difference here in the mid coast.

Alewives are in!

May 28, 2014

By Don Kleiner

In a big way this year, clearly all of the conservation efforts have paid off on the Maine coast. I hear that they are in trouble in southern New England but the runs locally are astounding. I suspect that the changes in our river systems really favor their production now. We visited the Damariscotta Mills fish ladder Monday evening with friends and I cannot remember ever seeing more fish in the ladder. The stream was black with fish, in fact the gulls were so full that they were no longer fighting

Are the little critters following me?

May 26, 2014

By Don Kleiner

Spring is the season of young critters that is for sure and this year I keep running into them, more than other years. Last week it was woodcock chicks and this week a young red squirrel. I backed down into the ramp to launch and when I started loading the rods and other equipment into the boat, there at my feet was a young (maybe three quarters grown) red squirrel.

Hampton Terrace Pool

There are 28 inns in Lenox.   Four have pools.   Beyond Lenox, there are 120 inns and b&bs in the Berkshires.   An even lower percentage have pools.

So why does Hampton Terrace have a heated 20 x 40 pool with natural rock waterfall?

Actually, there are NOT a lot of good reasons.   We open the pool on Memorial Day Weekend and close it at the end of September.   During that four month period, only July and August offer consistently warm days and marginally warm evenings.   June and September e...
