On the water again this morning

April 22, 2014

By Don Kleiner

At last! It has been a long cold winter to be sure with a spring that just did not want to start. Still it is 60 degrees this morning without much wind and a cloudy sky. This is the fun part of being a guide, I have to scout for the fish. That really means a few hours on the water for me, poking around to see what has changed over the winter.

Snow on the ground yesterday, 19 degrees this morning and the high was near 40. At least the wind is not blowing. The calendar says spring is here but it is hard to tell the last couple of days. We had some warm weather but I was busy first with the Maine Professional Guides Association annual banquet. A huge success thank you! Then I attended the Northeast Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies conference in Portland where I gave a presentation.

Getting ready for the coming season

April 08, 2014

By Don Kleiner

April marks the beginning of my summer season. The snow is nearly gone and the ponds will soon be ice free. The rites of spring are in full swing, some neighbors tap maple trees, the frost heaves are huge and the annual St George River canoe race, the water was high and the times fast. No I have never been in the race but my son Noah has been a few times and was again this year.

Guides Vacation Report

April 03, 2014

By Don Kleiner

Argy and our desert ride!So what does a guide do for a vacation? This year it was a visit to the desert and a fishing trip on the Pacific. Argy was scheduled to attend a conference in San Diego, we flew in to Las Vegas, rented a convertible and drove through Death Valley. An amazing place to be sure and as different as anyplace could be from Maine in late winter. We continued on to San Diego through Joshua Tree National Park.

Hampton Terrace Hallway

We have owned Hampton Terrace for fifteen years, and not a year goes by when we don't inplement a major project, or orchestrate a series of property upgrades.  This Spring is no exception.

Now that we have returned, I can share that Susan and I spent a couple of weeks away from the inn - celebrating our 35th anniversary at a beach, and visiting our kids and grandkids in Texas.   While we were gone, we had most of the main house floors completely refinished.   This is the kind of project that is best done...

Gone Fishing and Dodging a Snowstorm

March 24, 2014

By Don Kleiner

Argy and I are headed to San Diego leaving just ahead of the next snowstorm. Hopefully it misses here but at the moment is does not look that way. For the first time in my life I am looking forward to a few days in the sun and on the water.

Argy will be attending the National Art Education Association’s annual convention to receive her award and give a presentation, I will be hanging out and fishing with a guide on San Diego bay. Like many of you I found an Orvis endorsed guide on the internet.

Talking about what I do

March 15, 2014

By Don Kleiner

This week I will be speaking to the Union Area Chamber of Commerce on what I do. Of course being a guide I will not pass up the chance to tell a few stories. Details here. To me the real thing is explaining the various parts of my business and life and how they fit together. Maine Outdoors is a mystery to most of my neighbors because of the seasonality.
