MESSAGE BOARD
How should Boston commemorate the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks?
Officials in New York City announced today they will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at Ground Zero at which former Mayor Giuliani will begin a reading of the victims' names. Several Broadway plays will go dark and many of the companies that lost employees in the attacks are holding private memorial services. What should Boston do to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary? Should workers get time off to attend services? What sorts of ceremonies do you think Boston should hold?

Everyone should wear red, white, and blue that day, fundraisers by offices, individuals should be used to upgrade rescue, emergency services that save lives and someday might be needed for another terrorist attack, people should be encouraged to boycott network tv--it is very traumatic for the survivors of the victims to relive the graphic brutalilty of this tragedy through the constant broadcast of the videotapes of the planes striking, people falling, and the buildings collapsing--somber music would be more appropriate

A service on the Boston Common, prayers, candles, bells tolling, in unison with New York. I think for the first anniversary only, businesses should be closed.

At first, this sounds crazy, but I think that everyone should be encouraged to go to work on 9/11. A moment of silence and rememberance should be observed across the nation, but people should be encouraged to remember the final moments of the many lives that were lost, and to recapture the feelings of American pride and desire for international piece that they felt after the attacks, and I think the best way to accomplish all of this is to attend work and live your day as those who lost their lives were doing.
Katie, Somerville
make it a mandatory state holiday everything closed so people can go to church and pray for the people and there family's and then attend any ceremonies that may be around Boston I know one Priest who is having a Healing Service in Andover that night I believe everyone needs something that day Everyone has been affected by this horrible event thanks

I think that we should have a candlelight ceremony, where everyone either at work or at home goes outside at the same time holding a candle. It would be nice to have a few moments of silence and reflection during which everyone is together.

Boston should have a small ceromony if any at all. Although I believe a ceromony is appropriate for the healing of those who lost mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters in the attacks, I feel our best bet is to make referene of it rather than have a large ceromony. We are in economic turmoil and we need all the resources we have to upright our economy and to fight agaist those sort of attacks ever happening again.

It should be a national holiday so prayer services/church/temple/quiet reflection can be done.

A nice way to mark the anniversary would be, have people be cordial and nice that day. For the first few days after the attack, people were nicier to strangers, car's were not honking their horns, people let you change lanes, strangers smiled at each other in the streets, we came together as a nation. But that only last a few days, then we went back to our normal self absorbed lives.

Shut Down Logan for the entire day!

This country celebrates those who gave their lives at war in the name of freedom each Memorial Day. I think that we should bestow the same reverence and appreciation annually on those who unwittingly gave their lives that day. Should life stop? No, of course not. But can anyone say life has been the same since that morning? So many of us waste so much time each day staring at computer screens and taking calls that we forget what is important: Life itself. It would be a shame to go on with our day on 9/11 without taking time to give thanks for all we have. A day off to attend services? Most definetly... Services should be held at Castle Island in Southie where you can see the planes landing and taking off.
