How should Boston commemorate the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks?

Officials in New York City announced today they will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at Ground Zero at which former Mayor Giuliani will begin a reading of the victims' names. Several Broadway plays will go dark and many of the companies that lost employees in the attacks are holding private memorial services. What should Boston do to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary? Should workers get time off to attend services? What sorts of ceremonies do you think Boston should hold?

I feel that flags should be flown at half staff, Radio and TV silence at the time that the planes hit the towers and the field in Pennsylvania, and a memorial service both in New York and in Washington.

Call someone you haven't spoken to in a while and have a nice chat.

People who were directly affected should be able to take the day off if they need to, but everyone else should go to work. There's no state holiday for Pearl Harbor, so why should there be one for 9/11?

Matt, Boston

There should be a state day of respect, if not a national day. Local towns could have a ceremony at their fire stations. A non-donominational service would be really nice. We had one right after 9/11 at St. Theresa's church and it was very crowded. There should be some way everyone will have an opportunity to show their support. We do not ever want this to become just something that happened.

I second Kimberly from Quincy's sentiments. She is right-on.

A moment of silence when there were 4 planes that were highjacked... WTC Towers, Pentagon and Pennsylvania. This day of rememberence is not only for NYC but for the entire world. Let's not forget that there were other needless deaths around the USA.

Kim, boston

Close down Logan Airport.

Gilley, Worcester

I think we should all just go about our business on 9/11. For those of us who wish to pray can do so, but I feel that working hard and keeping our economy in good order pays more respect to fallen Americans (everywhere, not just the WTC)than the media garbage and hipocracy going around now. Tell me, will we have a day of silence for everytime an American dies at the hands of terrorism?

Renee, Malden

We should all go to work as usual, but at a specified time, all over the state, people should be allowed to go outdoors say a prayer and release balloons in memory of all the victims. At that specified time, church bells should also be ringing.

Anonymous, Tewksbury

Ensure that victims' families from the greater Boston area and New England are invited. 9/11 had a number of victims outside of NYC that have all been all but forgotten.
