How should Boston commemorate the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks?
Officials in New York City announced today they will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a ceremony at Ground Zero at which former Mayor Giuliani will begin a reading of the victims' names. Several Broadway plays will go dark and many of the companies that lost employees in the attacks are holding private memorial services. What should Boston do to mark the Sept. 11 anniversary? Should workers get time off to attend services? What sorts of ceremonies do you think Boston should hold?

I have to say that I agree with Brendan from Brooklyn. The city should do nothing - whenever a public memorial service occurs, it becomes a photo op and a circus. If people want to do anything, I think the best thing to do would be to do something private. I really was moved by the street corner candlelight vigils last year.

i think we all should take the time to observe a moment of silence to remember the victims of this nightmare and to reaffirm our solidarity as a country to vow to rid the world of the responsible parties who continue to mock our victims by their continued efforts to kill our people everwhere.

I think people should remember the day quietly and personally (wave your flags, light your candles, do whatever you need to do) and leave government organization out of it. I can't believe people are trying to use this as an excuse for a day off! If you are so distraught that you can't bear the thought of working, I'm sure you could use a personal day. But for the rest of us who would like to continue our lives, please stop being so dramatic.
Ann, Boston
No media event please. It should be personal.

1) Depose Saddam Hussein, eliminate Iraqi WMD program, install democratically elected system of gov't monitored by fmr. President Carter & The U.N. 2) Invade Saudi Arabia, hold Saudi oil fields as a United States protectorate until all terrorists & information re: terrorists have been surrendered. Inform the Saudis that we will return if they continue to sponsor terrorism and/or attempt an oil embargo. (see #4) 3) Destroy Hamas, Hezbollah & Fatah. See #1 above for installation of democratic Palestinian state. 4) Commit to developing fuel cells/alternative fuels for all U.S. cars & trucks within 15 years, similar to President Kennedy's Moon Landing pledge. Take the Saudis/OPEC out of the equation. We are at war. Organized, committed, vicious people are trying to kill us and would have taken out the entire city of New York with a "suitcase" atomic device if they had access. In short, systematically take the fight to every terrorist supporting nation on the globe. Make the costs of state supported Islamic radicalism prohibitive. This is the way to commemorate our honored dead.

I have a few ideas of things that could be done to commemorate the anniversary of the attacks: I think first of all, the city of Boston should have a moment of silence in the morning at the time of the attack. Secondly, I think a candlelight vigil would be appropriate, much like the one that was done the day of/after 9/11 at the Christian Science Church in Boston.

I think the city should close business for the day. Perhaps a ceremony on Boston Common.

We shold have a National Day of Rememborance.I think a ceremony reading off the names of those victims from New England would be appropriate. I would also like a permanemt flame lit in their memory in a Peace Garden somewhere. I think also agree a nine minute eleven second National Moment of Silence would be appropriate. We all need to move on, but we should not forget those who died especially those who have given their lives to save others.

Ring church bells for a minute for each plane's impact. Go to work; live your life. Demand our next governor commit to running Massport like a secure, professionally operated airport and not like a way-stop for government hackerama. MA citizens should be contrite and embarassed on Sept. 11.

Boston should remember with shame the role of the lax security at Logan Airport. Having flown through there several times since 9/11, i do not believe anything has changed for the better.
