I remember going to cooperstown when I was maybe 10 or 12. It was the year they unveiled the ted williams sculpture. I remember my dad, who grew up watching #9, telling me how great Ted Williams was. Of course, growing up in New Hampshire and being a Red Sox fan everyone knew who Ted Williams was, everyone wanted to be #9. When Ted came to the All-Star game in 1999 my Dad said there wasn't a dry eye in the ballpark. Today is a day to remember a man who had an amazing career and left in his prime to fight in a cause he believed in. Hats off to you Teddy Ballgame...enjoy endless days of clear skies and the smell of the freshly cut outfield grass.

i never saw the man play live, he retired more than 30 years before i was born. but i was born with a pair of redsox on my feet, a "B" cap on my head and teddy ballgame in my heart. we love you ted.

The greatest player I ever saw. As a high school player in 1951-52 I was awed by standing at the same plate in Fenway Park that Ted used to play. We palyed high school ball for the state champs, and the game in Fenway was the best, most memorable toime of my life. My hero was Ted; I wanted to hit like him. He was an individual, and his own man. He was a real war hero. A sad day for America.

Ya hadda be there. He wore his pants bottoms down at his ankles. We wore our pants bottoms down at our ankles. He had a 36 0z. bat, we had 36 oz. bats. He was secretly good to kids, so despite what "the Colonel" wrote in the newspaper, we knew Ted was more than o.k.. He had super-vision and so when they called his number he went like every one else, and yet Ted never did anything quite like everyone else. But, we knew when we got to be his age we'd go like he did. If Tom Brokaw is right about the people of that era he could not have found a better, representative of "The Greatest Generation" Than four hundred hitter and Marine Pilot, Captain Theodore Samuel Williams. I'm glad that we kids of my generation had THE Kid of his generation.

The Splendid Splinter. Always "The Kid". And my lifetime hero. And an American hero. No one gave as much to his country as Teddy Ballgame. And gave up so much of a fabulous career.
