Recommendations made by the American Academy of Pediatrics:

Recess should be considered a child’s personal time, and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.

Recess should be long enough and frequent enough to allow students to “mentally decompress.”

Recess shouldn’t be used as a replacement for physical education. Unlike a PE class, recess (particularly unstructured recess) provides the creative, social, and emotional benefits of play.

Recess should be safe and well supervised.
