Here are some tips from the city of Boston, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, and NStar on how to deal with the potentially record-breaking heat in the next few days:

• Limit strenuous activity

• Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid those that contain caffeine or alcohol

• Wear sunscreen and loose, light-fitting clothing when outside

• Rest often in cool areas and stay indoors as much as possible

• Pay attention to warning signs of heat-related illnesses, including nausea, dizziness and headaches, and call 911 if they appear

• Check in on elderly residents

• Visit one of the city’s water spray features operated by the Boston Parks Department

• Eat well-balanced, light, regular meals

• If you do not have air conditioning, stay on your lowest floor, out of the sun

• Visit air-conditioned places such as schools, libraries, theaters and other community facilities

• Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle

• Do not leave pets outside for extended periods and make sure they have plenty of water

• Use blinds, shades or drapes to block the sun from shining in windows

• If possible, keep room air conditioners out of the sun

• Try to use appliances later in the evening because they generate heat

• Visit MassSave.com for information regarding NSTAR central air conditioning rebates

For questions about heat-related city services, Boston residents should call the Mayor’s 24-Hour Hotline at 617-635-4500
