Elizabeth Warren launched a new television advertisement today, using ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer’s words to define her as “the founding mother of the agency to help consumers.”
The 30-second Warren ad is similar to others the Democratic challenger has run that depict her as a fighter for regular people against the powerful, and “unsparing in her criticism of the financial sector.” In this one, television anchor voices call her an outsider, and regular people praise her for being “gutsy” and standing “up to the corporate interests.”
“There’s been no real accountability for the people who broke our economy,” Warren says in a portion of a speech used in the ad.
The ad also shows her walking with President Obama, an important element for a candidate hoping to capitalize on large Democratic voter turnout for the presidential election.
Warren is running largely on her role as the champion of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, founded in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
Warren’s television ads have been a direct contrast with Senator Scott Brown’s. She is running as a fighter. He has been running as a someone who will reach across party lines. His current series of ads includes a variety of Democrats who say the Republican senator is the best candidate to cut through Washington’s partisan gridlock.
Warren is not the first one in the campaign to use a clip from a nationally known news reporter to lend credibility to her candidacy. Brown earlier ran an ad with a clip of a “60 Minutes” segment in which correspondent Leslie Stahl says Brown “ turned out to be unpredictably independent and beholden to no one.”
The Warren campaign would not say how much the latest ad, its eighth on television, will cost. Spokeswoman Alethea Harney said it is a “major statewide buy that will run for several weeks.”
Both candidates are among the nation’s leading fund-raisers and should have little trouble remaining on the air until the November election.
