Triathlete who died identified as Beverly man
The man who died Saturday after participating in a USA triathlon in Vermont has been identified by Burlington, Vt., police officials as a Massachusetts resident.
During the swimming portion of the race, rescue crews pulled Richard Angelo, 53, of Beverly, from the water because of a “medical issue,” Burlington police said in a statement. He was taken to the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center where he was later pronounced dead.
“The matter remains under investigation,” the statement said. “However, nothing appears outwardly suspicious at this time.”
USA Triathlon CEO Rob Urbach said in a statement that he was “deeply saddened” by the death.
“The sport of triathlon lost a member of our beloved community today, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the athlete’s family and friends,” he said.
