Expressing their sympathy and support, neighbors of the mother of former US Navy SEAL Glen A. Doherty, who was killed in an attack last week on a US consulate in Libya, lined their Woburn neighborhood with American flags.
On Saturday, a neighbor who lives across from the mother, Barbara Doherty, called the city’s Office of Veterans Service in the hope of purchasing flags to decorate the neighborhood. The office instead donated 450 flags to the cause, and the neighbors set out to line them up and down the neighborhood.
“We felt it proper to identify her home,” said Larry Guiseppe, veteran’s agent. Guiseppe said that Barbara Doherty has been, “extremely thankful and impressed” by the group’s efforts since seeing the decorations.
At Doherty’s home, the neighbors placed a larger American flag alongside a US Navy flag. The flags will remain up for at least a week, Guiseppe said.
“The mayor was in full support of the effort,” he said, “Anything we can do to support the family, we will.”
Family and friends of Glen A. Doherty are encouraged to attend his memorial service at St. Eulalia Parish at 50 Ridge St. in Winchester from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday A funeral Mass will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
