Framingham man given two life sentences for murdering Hudson couple in 2010
A Framingham man was convicted today in the slaying of a man and woman in their Hudson apartment in 2010, despite his attempts to portray himself as a victim in the same attack, prosecutors said.
Idelfonso Velez, 29, was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Trisha Bennett and Angel Ortiz.
Velez called 911 around 3:30 a.m. on May 1, 2010, and told arriving Hudson police that he had tried to help Bennett and Ortiz after the couple were attacked inside the master bedroom of their Manning Street apartment. Velez was standing in a nearby parking lot suffering from apparent stab wounds, authorities said.
Bennett, 20, and Ortiz, 23, were both killed by someone who stabbed them repeatedly, authorities have said. Bennett was the mother of a small child and Ortiz was the father of three children, relatives have said.
Velez told police at the time that he was with the two victims between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., but had gone to sleep shortly thereafter. Velez told police that he woke to to the sounds of a struggle coming from the couple’s bedroom and that he went to the aid of his friends but was attacked by two men.
State and Hudson police, however, discovered inconsistencies in his account, and also eventually matched his DNA to the murder weapon, among other forensic evidence, Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr.’s office said.
Superior Court Judge Sandra Hamlin gave Velez the mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The trial will automatically be reviewed by the Supreme Judicial Court.
“This defendant brutally stabbed two victims to death in their home and then portrayed himself as a victim while he lied and misled police,” Leone said in a statement. “The defendant will now spend the rest of his life behind bars for committing two awful murders. Our thoughts remain with the friends and family of Trisha Bennett and Angel Ortiz.”John R. Ellement can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
