Marshfield firefighter rescued from burning debris when Scituate home collapses during fire
A Marshfield fire lieutenant was seriously injured early today when he was trapped under burning debris from a raging house fire in Scituate. A group of firefighters furiously dug through flames to pull him out, officials said.
Lieutenant Joseph Kalinowski and three other firefighters were making their way to the second floor of the burning building around 2:34 a.m. when a structural failure occurred, knocking all of the firefighters down and trapping Kalinowski, the Marshfield Fire Department said.
Rescuers from the Scituate and Marshfield fire departments worked quickly to free Kalinowski from the blaze by 2:46 a.m.
When firefighters arrived, the two-story building was completely on fire and an additional engine was called to battle the flames.
Kalinowski was taken by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital for possible burns to his neck and back, the fire department said. There were no apparent respiratory injuries or fractures, officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Scituate Fire Department.Sarah N. Mattero can be reached at email@example.com.
