Dropping temperatures and rain showers expected throughout today

Temperatures will continue to drop sharply today as a weather system brings in colder air and occasional heavy rain showers, according to the National Weather Service.

The cold front passing over New England has reached Boston, triggering dramatic temperature changes, said weather service meteorologist Alan Dunham.

“In Boston it was 62 degrees at 7:37 this morning and by 7:50 it was down to 56,” Dunham said.

The mercury will drop slowly as the day continues, he said.

“I certainly don’t expect it to get any warmer,” Dunham said. “It’ll be chilly tonight with lows in the mid-30s.”

Bay Staters could see raindrops at any point during the day, but the wet weather will move off to the east by about 8 p.m., he said.

“We’ll have on-and-off showers pretty much through the entire day,” Dunham said.

The clouds will clear by Wednesday morning, making way for blue skies and dry weather, thanks to a large high pressure system above the Northeast that will keep away any precipitation, he said.

“We’ll see a lot of sunshine, but it’s going to be chilly with highs only in the mid-40s,” Dunham said. “It’s going to feel colder than that, though, because we’ll have a gusty north wind.”

The rest of the week and the weekend will bring sunny skies and temperatures in the high 40s.
