Authorities suspend search for fisherman after 42-foot scallop boat sinks near Provincetown

Authorities have suspended the search for one of two fishermen who were aboard a 42-foot scallop boat that sank about two miles north of Provincetown Sunday.

The “Twinlights” vessel capsized at about 11:30 a.m. in an area where water depths reach about 190 feet, United States Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Simpson said Sunday afternoon. The boat is believed to have become entangled in fishing gear, causing it to sink, he said.

One man, who is believed to have been on the deck of the boat when it sank, was rescued by a nearby lobster boat called the “Glutton,” which called the Coast Guard to tell them about the sinking boat, Simpson said.

Another man, who is believed to have been inside the pilot house of the boat that sunk, has not been found, he said.

The search for him was suspended at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Coast Guard and State Police used a helicopter, vessels and a dive team to search according to Simpson.

The police dive team made one dive Sunday afternoon but was unable to find the missing man or the boat, he said. The team plans to dive again Monday.

Simpson said the search crews had covered more than 80 square-miles and, except for the dive team, they continued to search for the man Sunday evening, when the water’s temperature was measured to be about 49 degrees, the air temperature was about 46 degrees and the wind was about 15 knots.
