A Lynn English High School teacher is facing charges after allegedly providing a high school student with marijuana during the school day on Tuesday.

Charles Saltzman, 50, was arraigned today in Lynn District Court on charges of distributing a Class D substance (marijuana) and a drug school zone violation, said Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf, she said.

Saltzman was arrested at the high school Tuesday afternoon, said Lieutenant Christopher Kelly, a Lynn police spokesman. Kelly said police were notified of Saltzman’s alleged drug involvement earlier the same day. “This wasn’t a protracted investigation,’’ Kelly said.

He said police have connected Saltzman to at least one student, but he added the investigation is ongoing.

Saltzman, who is free on bail, is due back in court Dec. 12 for a pretrial hearing and appearance of counsel. He did not have an attorney present with him at his arraignment today, Kimball Monahan said.

A number listed for Charles Saltzman was disconnected.
