A woman was rescued Friday afternoon from the Fort Point Channel by a Boston police officer who jumped into the water to assist her, authorities said.

The incident took place in South Boston just before 1 p.m., and the police officer managed to hold the woman above water until three Boston firefighters jumped in to assist him, Boston police said.

The firefighters moved the woman over to a rescue ladder off the Summer Street bridge then waited for a State Police boat to arrive and take them out of the water, said Boston Fire spokesman Steve MacDonald.

The woman, who was suffering from hypothermia, was taken to an area hospital along with the three firefighters, MacDonald said.

Authorities are still investigating why the woman was in the water, MacDonald said.
