Lucky ducks get rescued from Lowell canal

Two ducks are in luck today after being rescued from a Lowell canal, officials said.

The Lowell Fire Department was called at 1:42 p.m. and spent 45 minutes working to approach the ice-bound ducks, said Bob Flynn, deputy fire chief. Three fire companies responded to the canal near 130 Central St., though nobody needed to physically pull the ducks from the water.

“We just had to get close and shoo them away,” Flynn said. While one duck was able to fly away, the other’s wings got too wet to fly, prompting Lowell animal control officers to take it in.
