The Chelsea Street Bridge will be closed every night next week and all next weekend for mechanical and electrical systems calibration and adjustments, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The bridge, which crosses the Chelsea Creek on the Chelsea/Boston line, will be closed to cars and pedestrians every night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Sunday and will be closed all next weekend—from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

All traffic will be detoured to Route 1A (McClellan Highway), and the closures will not affect marine traffic, said the statement.

MassDOT encourages drivers who can avoid the area to seek alternate routes; those who can’t should expect delays and reduce speed along the detoured routes.

Additional closures are expected later this month and will be announced once the work is scheduled.
