Day three of frigid temperatures continued to tie up the morning commute, with cold weather splitting an air hose on one commuter rail train, officials said.
An inbound Providence/Stoughton commuter rail train could not leave the Providence station as scheduled at 7:35 a.m. today after a hose line split due to the cold weather, Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Co. spokesman Scott Farmelant said.
He said the train sat at the station for 41 minutes; the train departed at 8:25 a.m., he said in an e-mail.
“When it’s cold, things tend to contract,” Farmelant said. “And once you find it, you replace it.”
At 9:52 a.m. today, the T reported that passengers on the Fitchburg/South Acton line “may experience significant delays” because of “major interruption in the signal system.’’

Another day of delays plagued some Green Line passengers, with a disabled outbound train at Arlington Station just before 9 a.m. Disabled trains at the C-Line’s Coolidge Corner stop and the D-Line’s Park Street platform were 15 minutes behind schedule just before 8 a.m.
All this despite 10 additional Green Line trains running for the morning commute, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.
Red Line passengers also saw delays, with a disabled train at Quincy Center Station slowing the Braintree branch 20 to 25 minutes just before 9 a.m.

The officials would not say whether cold weather was a factor.
In Boston this morning, temperatures were in the double digits at 10 degrees at 9 a.m., though 16-mile-per-hour winds dropped wind chills to minus 6 degrees, the National Weather Service said.
