HINGHAM -- Hingham firefighters battle a three alarm fire at 276 East Street that eventually destroyed the home.
Five fire departments responded to a three-alarm fire which destroyed a Hingham home early this afternoon, a Hingham fire official said.
Hingham Fire received the call of a fire at 276 East St. around 11:45 a.m., said Hingham Fire Department administrative assistant Kate Knorr. Crews from Hull, Scituate, Rockland, and Norwell, as well as investigators from state Fire Marshal’s office were on scene this afternoon.
The East Street home was declared a total loss, and the fire chief ordered an “exterior attack,” Knorr said.
An exterior attack means fire fighters leave the building and try to extinguish the fire from outside to keep it from spreading, and to limit the number of men exposed to danger and resources used, according to the US Fire Academy.
The home is a single-family Cape Cod-style residence, built in 1908 according to the Hingham town assessor database.
