After the rain, a little snow caps off weekend in Boston

After a rainy, slushy night in the Boston area that left only trace amounts of new snow on the ground, 1 to 2 inches of drier, fluffier snow are expected to fall this afternoon on the city, the North Shore, and the western suburbs, said Alan Dunham, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

About 2.7 inches of snow fell in Worcester over Saturday night and this morning, according to the National Weather Service. Leominster saw 3.2 inches of accumulation, the highest measured in the state.

Some rain is possible in Central Massachusetts this afternoon, but snow will likely return and pile another 1 to 2 inches there by the end of the day.

“I would expect for the rest of the day to see the snow spread east and south, into the eastern suburbs and Greater Boston,” Dunham said.

Skies in Boston, west of the city, and on the North Shore are scheduled to clear this evening, Dunham said.

The South Shore, which has only seen rain and traces of snowflakes so far this weekend, may get about an inch of snowfall tonight.

The start of the workweek promises to be more pleasant: Dunham said he expects Monday and Tuesday to be mostly sunny with highs in the low 40s.

The forecast is unclear for the rest of the week, though precipitation is likely from Wednesday to Friday.

“Sometimes it’ll be snow, sometimes it’ll be rain, sometimes it’ll be rain and snow,” he said.
