Lawyer for 9-year-old Brockton rapper says abuse allegations are ‘absurd’

Lil Poopy, the Brockton 9-year-old whose appearance in Youtube rap videos has sparked controversy, will continue to pursue his music career, despite a pending child abuse and neglect investigation of his father, his attorney said.

Lil Poopy, whose given name is Luie Rivera Jr., has starred in several online rap videos in which he simulates sexually suggestive acts with adult women, gambles, and appears in club scenes. On Sunday, Brockton police filed a complaint with the Department of Children and Families against Luis M. Rivera, the boy’s father, alleging that the videos showed abuse and neglect.

“This is a terrific young kid and he has got a strict, loving, and supportive family,” said Joseph Krowski Jr., who said he had been the boy’s lawyer for some time. “He is just like any 9-year-old except that he has this exceptional talent.”

The Department of Children and Families is conducting a 15-day, “non-emergency,” investigation of the Rivera family, said spokeswoman Cayenne Isaksen. She would not discuss details of the case, but said in abuse and neglect cases investigators interview family members, people who live in the house, and witnesses presented by the accuser or accused.

Krowski said the department has not contacted the Rivera family yet.

The Enterprise of Brockton reported that on Nov. 9, 2010, Luis M. Rivera was arrested on drug possession charges during a police raid on an apartment where he and his children were staying.

Krowski said the scope of the abuse and neglect investigation should not include that incident because the charges were dismissed.

“There were several officers there at the time [of the 2010 incident] and they didn’t feel the need to file a 51A [complaint] at that time,” Krowksi said.

He said Rivera’s father requires the boy to go to school every day, where the boy receives good grades and is held in high regard by his teachers. Krowski called the allegations of abuse and neglect “absurd.”
