Globe wins honors in Society of News Design competition

The Boston Globe’s design staff won 18 awards in the Society for News Design’s 34th annual competition, bringing home honors for their work on everything from sports to politics to arts and entertainment coverage.

“We’re gratified by this recognition of the Globe’s design, infographics, and digital team,” said Dan Zedek, assistant managing editor. “The awards are a reflection of the powerful storytelling of our reporters and photographers and our close collaboration with our word and picture editors.”

Among the winners announced last week were staffers David Butler, Alvin Chang, Gabriel Florit, Grant Staublin, Michael Workman, and Javier Zarracina. They collectively won the silver medal for multimedia presentation for their project “68 Blocks: Life, Death, Hope.”

Anica Butler, Thea Breite, Chris Marstall, and Antony Paolillo joined Chang and Staublin in winning a group excellence award for their multimedia work on the “68 Blocks” project.

Chang and Monica Ulmanu both won excellence awards for their multimedia portfolios, spanning multiple projects. Luke Knox won four excellence awards for sports design.

Zedek, Ryan Huddle, Greg Klee, and Daigo Fujiwara each won multiple excellence awards for multimedia and print design. And Heather Hopp-Bruce won an excellence award for her work on the editorial page.
