Mayor Thomas M. Menino said today that he hopes to leave Parkman House this weekend and move back to his home in Hyde Park for the first time in five months.
Menino has lived in the city-owned mansion on Beacon Street since Christmas, when he left the hospital after an eight-week stay for a variety of ailments. Since his illness, Menino has had difficulty with stairs; the Parkman House has an elevator.
In an interview today on WFXT-TV (Channel 25), Menino said he and his wife are having bathrooms renovated and will return home as soon as the work is done.
“We want to be back in Hyde Park,” Menino said. “I hope by this weekend we’ll be there.”
Permits filed with the city show that Menino is renovating bathrooms on the first and second floors of his long-time home in the Readville section of Hyde Park. The work includes installing new fixtures and adding grab bars, which can help with balance.
Menino’s spokeswoman, Dot Joyce, added that the mayor’s return home was contingent on contractors finishing their work. “If the mayor had his way, it would be tomorrow,” Joyce said.
Menino, 70, fell ill in mid-October on a vacation in Italy with his wife. He cut the trip short, returned to Boston, and was admitted to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a severe respiratory infection and a blood clot that traveled from his legs to his lungs. While in the hospital, Menino fractured a vertebra in his back and was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
In the 13 weeks he had lived in Parkman House, Menino has faithfully gone to physical therapy, often attending two sessions a day, according to his staff. The five-term mayor told Fox 25 he must decide by May 13 whether he will apply for nomination papers, the first step in running for re-election.
“I haven’t made that decision yet,” Menino told WFXT-TV, adding about his health, “I’m doing real well, real well.”Andrew Ryan can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org Follow him on Twitter @globeandrewryan.
