Suzanne Lee, the former principal who came within 97 votes of ousting an incumbent from the Boston City Council, announced today that she will seek a rematch against Councilor Bill Linehan of South Boston.
Lee challenged Linehan in 2011 in District 2, a seat that has always been held by a man from South Boston. The district also included the South End and other slices of the city and has changed demographically in recent years. It was redrawn for the fall election during a redistricting process to include more of Downtown, which has been flooded by young professionals.
Lee lives in Chinatown and was head of the Josiah Quincy School. She is hoping to build on the support she received two years ago.
“Last time it was the first time people met me,” Lee said today in an interview. “This time, they know me better.”
Lee has aggressively raised money the past few months and had almost $39,000 in her campaign account at the end of February, records show. Linehan, who has served on the council since 2007, ended the month with a balance of just over $5,000.
In the interview, Lee said there is a significant amount of talent in District 2, but work is needed to improve schools, development, and small businesses.
“This is a continuation of my life’s work,” Lee said when asked why she was running again for City Council. “I’ve always worked to bring people together to get things done.”
